Elouera Yellow Fins

It’s always been a dream of mine to make Surf Life Saving a possibility for every kid, and an opportunity for every family to experience.

My name is Kiara Summers, I am 14 years old and part of Elouera Surf Life Saving Club. About 14 months ago, at my club captain selection interview, I brought up my idea of starting a program for kids who were unable to participate in mainstream nippers. This would allow them to come to the beach on a Sunday morning and participate alongside all the other nippers.

We were lucky enough to get in contact with Aspect, who reassured us and helped us get this program up and running, along with a committed group of dedicated Elouera members, Yellow Fins was created.

Our season began in November last year, at first, I was quite nervous, this was something I had never done before but then again something I have wanted for so long, I had my fingers crossed that all was going to go well. We didn’t have the best weather for our first week, but that didn’t stop anyone from having fun.

The nine week season went so fast and each week we only grew as a group. It was so good to see the kids able to have fun at the beach while learning how to be safe in the water. Watching their faces light up when we told them it was time to go in the water was just as good as winning the lottery. Nothing would ever be able to replace the memories and experiences that I along with all the helpers and water safety have just had. If it wasn’t for Aspect none of this would have been able to happen.

We had our final week of Yellow Fins on the 4th February, it was amazing to see how much everyone had changed and how much more confident they all were.

Waking up on a Sunday morning and going down to the beach to have fun with all the amazing kids really did make my week and I am looking forward to doing it all again next season!
